J: I was under the impression that we were dressing as ninjas for this comic book showdown thing. So tell me, Sherlock, does this look like a ninja uniform to you?

S: John, I only have one uniform on hand at the flat, and on such short notice this was the only ninja costume available at the costume hire. I had it delivered without seeing it first so how was I to know how... unauthentic it would be...?

...Yeeeah so I was studiously looking up ninja uniform references and some "sexy" ninja costumes showed up in the search results and I was just like, welp, now someone's getting a dumb sexy costume, it's inevitable. And since Sherlock would of course have his own ninja uniform (why??), that left John.
